The Swedish competition final in Bastad will feature an Argentine derby. Argentina’s Baez is the surprise of the day, as both underdogs triumph. Andrey Rublev, a player ranked in the world’s top ten, was no match for the rising young South American.
The eighth-ranked Baez looked unimpressive, as the Spaniard cruised to a straight-sets victory. Sebastian took a commanding 4-1 lead in the opening set and clinched the match with a 6-2 win without a lot of difficulty. Rublev came back to tie the match in the second set after Baez was up 3-0.
Finally, Baez gets the match-winning break in the tenth and final game. Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo stunned Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta in the second semifinal, tarring him 6-3, 6-1.
In the American derby on grass in Newport, it goes to Maxime Cressy. There are no tiebreaks in the three sets played, which is surprising given the presence of Isner. Cressy, one of the 2022 shocks, controlled the opening set and cruised to victory.
In the second set, Isner took advantage of a few unforced errors by Cressy in the pivotal fifth game, but Cressy bounced back in the third and final set to close off the games. Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan will meet Cressy in the final after he defeated Australian surprise Kubler, much like Murray had done.
On the day, there will be a fascinating final.
In the women’s circuit, things are not going well.
Pera’s winning streak continues in the women’s division. Defeating local favorite (at least according to rankings) Putyinseva in the semifinals, the American tennis player advances to the finals where she will meet Serbia’s Krunic.
Petra Martic, on the other hand, defeated Caroline Garcia in a hard-fought match in Lausanne. The Croatian tennis star won the first set while battling, but then crumbled dramatically in the second. It all comes down to the third set, where Martic uses her expertise to gain a free ride to the finals.
