“Djokovic’s the best returner…”
Mark Petchey believes that debates about who is the greatest tennis player of all time detract from the enjoyment of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer for their followers.
Nadal and Djokovic currently lead the Big Three with 22 and 21 Grand Slam victories, respectively, in 2022. Third on the all-time list is Roger Federer, who is currently recovering from knee surgery.
“I have often thought that fan rivalry detracts from what we have seen from athletes throughout the years.
Roger “Sportskeeda quotes Petchey on the AO Show. Novak has more major tournament wins than Petchey.” Contrasts between tennis players have diminished their brilliance because of comparisons over who is better, as the saying goes, and I believe that comparisons have diminished the brilliance of tennis players.
When it comes to the greatest player debate, Mark Petchey thinks Novak Djokovic should be given more credit for making the cut.
Petchey focuses on Nole in his discussion.
Ex-player, broadcaster, and coach Mark Petchey gave his thoughts on the Wimbledon final.
Nick came out of the blocks calm, which is impressive given that this is his first Major final. But you also have to keep in mind that this is the surface on which he feels he has his best chance of winning a Major, and that comes with some pressure, because it is not going to be easy for him to win on this surface.”
A testament to Petchey’s ability to wait until Nick was beginning to worry that his opportunity was fading is the fact that “I know Novak is the best returning player we’ve ever had, but the ability to not panic and wait until Nick started to worry if his opportunity was fading is again a tribute to someone like Novak, who also had different pressures,” Petchey said.
