Fognini-Bolelli in Bastad go within a point of the title. Race to Turin remains wide open

In Bastad, both Fognini and Bolelli came within one step of winning the title. In point of fact, the two Azzurri had a match point after coming back from being down a set in the third and final act of the match, but they blew it by throwing away a lead of 10-9 in the super tie-break. The team consisting of Rafael Matos of Brazil and David Vega Hernandez of Spain were victorious from their battle (6-4 3-6 13-11).

One break in each set was all that was needed to tip the scales in either player’s favor; it came in the third game of the first set and the eighth game of the second set. After a long and arduous encounter, the third set went to a super tie-break, which was eventually won by the opposing pair after they fought off a match point.

TURIN OBJECTIVE – Regret is a certainty for Bolelli and Fognini, but this was their third final of 2022, following those in Sydney in January and in Rio de Janeiro a month later, where they were able to win the title as well. TURIN OBJECTIVE – Bolelli and Fognini are certain to be disappointed. Given the results that the Italian pair has had this year at tournaments like the Australian Open (quarterfinals) and the two Masters 1000s that took place in Miami and Rome (semifinals), there is still a chance that they will qualify for the ATP Finals that will be held in Turin. With 1,775 points, Fabio and Simone are now in ninth place in the year’s end competition. They are only one spot behind Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah of Colombia (1,785 points)
