Palermo Ladies Open: Sara Sorribes Tormo stays calm as Shuai Zhang enters the second round.

On Monday, Shuai Zhang defeated Rebekah Masarova 7-6(3), 7-6(7) to go to the second round of the Palermo Ladies Open. The match was finished by Zhang in 1 hour, 55 minutes. Compared to the Spaniard’s 67 percent, Zhang won 74% of her first serve points.

In contrast, Masarova won 53 percent more points than Zhang did with her second serve. Throughout the match, each player secured three service breaks. Jasmine Paolini of Italy will be Zhang’s opponent in the second round.

6-3, 6-1 in 66 minutes, Paolini defeated Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova in their opening round encounter. 66 percent of the first service points and 77 percent of the second service points were won by Paolini. Comparatively, her Slovakian opponent was only able to win 33% of her second service points and 48% of her first service points.

While only losing her serve once throughout the entire match, Paolini also won five of her six break points against Schmiedlova’s serve.

Sara Sorribes Tormo survives as the fourth seed in the Palermo women’s open. Sara Sorribes Tormo defeated Romanian Ana Bogdan in the first round after coming back from a 2-6, 0-3 deficit.

After three hours and 19 minutes, the Spaniard won 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Leolia Jeanjean, a French qualifier, will compete against Sorribes Tormo in the second round. In 1 hour and 32 minutes, Jeanjean defeated Ylena In-Albon of Switzerland 6-2, 6-4.

In-Albon earned 59 percent of first serve points, whereas Jeanjean took 67 percent of those, and 58 percent of second serve points, to the latter’s 33 percent. On the Swiss serve, she converted four of the six break points she faced while saving three of the four break points she faced.

Oceane Dodin, Jeanjean’s French partner, also advanced to the Palermo Ladies Open second round. Matilde Paoletti, an Italian qualifier, was defeated by Dodin 6-4 and 7-5 in one hour and 48 minutes. Dodin must defeat sixth-seeded Irina-Camelia Begu to get to the quarterfinals. In their first encounter, the Romanian won by scores of 6-3, 4-6, and 6-3 over Spanish qualifier Marina Bassols Ribera.
