Sixth in the world. According to Carlos Alcaraz, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are the two best players in the world, not him. Alcaraz, despite being only 19 years old, has had a phenomenal 2022 season, having already won two Masters titles and coming close to cracking the top five.
Alcaraz beat Nadal and Djokovic in consecutive matches en route to winning the Madrid Masters. Although Alcaraz has accomplished a lot this year, he does not consider himself the best.
I don’t think I’m the best player right now, I mean, Novak [Djokovic] won Wimbledon, Rafa [Nadal] won Roland Garros and Australia, so there are a lot of great players ahead of me right now,” Alcaraz said, as quoted by Sportskeeda.
To paraphrase, “I didn’t take it as pressure. Even though it serves as inspiration, I don’t believe I’m the best player at the moment.
As for Alcaraz, he’s back in the mud.
Alcaraz chose to switch back to clay after Wimbledon. Alcaraz launched his campaign in Hamburg on Tuesday.
As the top seed in the German clay event, Alcaraz is eager to make a splash in his tournament debut. Although Alcaraz had a shaky start to his Hamburg campaign, he was able to pull out a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 victory over Nicola Kuhn (3). Reaching the quarterfinals at the French Open and having a good match against Zverev “was unbelievable for me,” Alcaraz said.
I can’t wait to get back out there and give it my all on clay court again. There is no doubt in my mind that I can take first place in this competition. To participate in such a prestigious event for the first time is something I am looking forward to tremendously. Coach Juan Carlos Ferrero, who played in this tournament decades ago, raved about its beauty. I can’t wait to get out on the field and play. Being the favorite doesn’t bother me; in fact, it encourages me to do my best.
