Yulia Putintseva and Caroline Garcia advance to the round of 16 in the Palermo Ladies Open.

Tuesday’s Palermo Ladies Open first-round match was won by Yulia Putintseva. In one hour and fifteen minutes, the Kazakh defeated Australian fortunate loser Jaimee Fourlis 6-3, 6-1. While Fourlis only won 38% of her first serve points, Putintseva won around 76% of them. Despite failing to save both break opportunities, Putintseva secured six breaks on her opponent’s serve and won the match without incident.

Putintseva’s opponent in the second round is Diane Parry. In her first-round match, the Frenchwoman prevailed over American Lauren Davis 7-6(5), 6-2, in one hour and 46 minutes. The fifth-seeded Caroline Garcia defeated the Frenchwoman Chloe Paquet in the first round with a powerful comeback.

Garcia won 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-2 in two hours and twelve minutes.

In the sixth game of the opening set, Garcia broke Paquet’s serve. Although she immediately dropped her serve, she managed a second service break in the eighth game to take a 5-3 lead with a chance to serve for the set in the ninth game.

However, she dropped her serve, and Paquet failed to break serve again in the tenth game. Paquet won the set and the tie-break to take the lead in the match. Garcia, though, made sure she did not falter in the final two sets and denied her opponent any opportunity to retake the lead.

Elisabetta Cocciaretto will be Garcia’s opponent in the quarterfinal round. In 57 minutes, Cocciaretto defeated Sara Errani to win the Italian derby 6-1, 6-0. Tuesday’s home tournament for the Italian ladies was uneventful.

Panna Udvardy of Hungary beat Lucrezia Stefanini 6-1, 7-6(4) in the opening round. The Chinese player Xiyu Wang was beaten by Lucia Bronzetti in her opening round match by scores of 6-3, 6-3. Last but not least, Martina Trevisan had to withdraw from the competition due to a back ailment.

In the meanwhile, Elina Avanesyan defeated Brazilian Carolina Alves in their first-round match, replacing Trevisan as the fortunate loser. After 2.5 hours of play, Avanesyan prevailed 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Udvardy will then take on Anna Bondar, the seventh seed.

Bondar defeated Clara Burel of France in the opening round with scores of 6-4, 6-4, and Bronzetti will face Avanesyan for a place in the quarterfinals. The second round of the Palermo Ladies Open will feature a match between eighth seed Nuria Parrizas Diaz and Julie Grabher.

The Austrian overcame Xinyu Wang 6-3, 6-3, while the Spaniard defeated Asia Muhammad 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. Palermo Ladies Open provided the image.
