Duarte Vale qualifies for the semi-finals in Idanha-a-Nova

The 23-year-old Duarte Vale, who is just starting out as a professional tennis player after five successful seasons on the North American university circuit, advanced to the semi-finals of the ITF M25 of Idanha-a-Nova on Friday and is currently the only Portuguese player still competing in singles.

The Cascais native and former University of Florida student, now ranked 568th on the ATP, defeated the Lisbon native and 582nd on the ATP, Pedro Arajo, 6-1 and 6-4, in 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Teenager Miguel Gomes from Portugal and 21-year-old Francisco Rocha, who will be ranked again on Monday, were both eliminated from the “rooms” round. Rocha lost 6-4, 6-4 to the former junior world number one from Poland, Filip Peliwo. Gomes lost to Israeli Ben Patael (554th) in straight sets (6-2, 6-3).
