World Veterans Championship: Portugal in the +35 men’s and women’s ‘semi-finals

At the legendary Jamor tennis complex, Portuguese tennis players had a royal morning. This Tuesday, the Portuguese men’s and women’s +35 teams advanced from the group round of the competition to the World Masters semi-finals, which are taking place in Oeiras.

Rita Freitas and Frederica Piedade helped Portugal defeat Great Britain in the women’s competition after victories against Poland (2-1) and Ireland (3-0). Rita Freitas lost singles matches in the first meeting for the first time, but she easily defeated Nicola Slater this time, 6-2, 6-3. The British Katharine Dearing was then defeated by Piedade in three games, 3-6, 6-1, and 6-3. The match versus Germany in the semifinal is on Thursday.

Fred Gil and Rui Machado excelled in the men’s singles. Fred Gil defeated Nikola Prpic 6-1, 6-0, while Machado (previously ATP 59th) defeated Thomir Culjak 6-2, 6-4.

The nation that triumphs in the contest between the top-ranked team from Group C (Spain or Great Britain) and the top-ranked team from Group F will play Portugal on Thursday (Australia or Chile).
