Domingues beats former Roland Garros semi-finalist in Cordenons
Really big! In terms of rankings, Joao Domingues added his biggest victory on Wednesday since October 2020 when he defeated a former world number 16 who had already advanced to the semifinals of Roland Garros.
The 316th-ranked Portuguese player in the ATP rankings beat exactly one Italian to go to the second round of the Challenger of Cordenons in Italy. We’re referring to Marco Cecchinato, who is presently ranked 140th in the world and was in the French Grand Slam final in 2018. Cecchinato was unable to defeat Domingues this time, who triumphed with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Since beating Andrej Martin in Marbella in October 2020, when Martin was ranked 102nd in the ATP rankings, this is the oliveirense’s best victory in terms of rating. Domingues thus ensures his passage to the second round, where he will compete for a spot in the quarterfinals with the Italian Andrea Vavassori (210th).
