Back in Washington, Alexander Zverev defeats Kevin Anderson to win his fifth ATP championship.

In 2017, one of the players to defeat was Alexander Zverev. Despite his youth, the 20-year-old won the fourth championship of the year in Washington. To win the fifth ATP title, Zverev defeated Kevin Anderson, Kei Nishikori, and Daniil Medvedev.

He became the first U20 player since Juan Martin del Potro in 2008 to win four trophies in a single season! Alexander defeated Kevin Anderson 6-4, 6-4 in the championship match for his second victory over the South African at this competition in the last three years.

In ten service games, Zverev dropped nine points while never facing a break point or a deuce. To dominate the scoreboard and secure the victory, though, the young player earned six break chances and converted one in each set.

Nearly 80% of the points were decided in four strokes or less in this quick-moving contest, with a service winner in four out of every 10 points. The quantity of unforced errors was controlled, and Alexander had a huge lead in the longest rallies, winning 19 out of 23.

They both struck 22 service aces, and Anderson had to make a space to test the young gun there since he had the resources to hold his own in prolonged battles. The number of winners remained essentially the same. With 12 errors against Anderson and 23 errors against him, Zverev secured the victory in this category.

The German overcame the South African’s modest advantage in the longer rallies by dominating the shorter ones, securing the victory in style.

Before Alexander stole his service at a crucial point in the match, at 1-1, with a cunning lob that compelled Anderson’s blunder, Kevin held two break chances in the opening game to escape a quick defeat.

They both served brilliantly in the subsequent games, scoring 19 service aces in the first 36 points, and Zverev secured the lead with three victories in the fourth game. After 34 minutes, the German finished the set in two games after scoring three victories in game eight to take a 5-3 lead.

At the start of the second set, Kevin committed three unforced errors and found himself down a set and a break because he had no service winners to support him. With the help of this momentum, Zverev made comfortable holds in each subsequent game, blazing three wins in game eight to cut the deficit to the championship to one game.

At 5-4, Alexander served for the match and won three service points to secure the victory and win the first match at the ATP 500 level.
