Cerundolo on first encountering Djokovic
Cerundolo first encountered Djokovic at the Serbia Open in Belgrade more than a year ago.
As a qualifier in Buenos Aires in early March 2021, Cerundolo won his first ATP final. Cerundolo traveled to Belgrade for the Serbia Open a month and a half later. He ran into Djokovic there, who wished him well in his run in Buenos Aires.
When Cerundolo learned that Djokovic was aware of his Buenos Aires run, he was astounded. “I traveled to Belgrade to compete in the qualifiers after making the final here in Buenos Aires. Djokovic approached me and greeted me. When I was rated 110 or 120, Djokovic approached me, gave me his name, and thanked me for making the Buenos Aires final.
He gave me his congratulations for all of my accomplishments. He was fully informed. I don’t know about the others, but at least [he] knows everything. He even inquired about my brother, which made me think, “Wow! This man is the best in the world, and yet he is an expert,” According to Cerundolo, ESPN Tennis.
Cerundolo has been playing the best tennis of his life over the past few weeks, in the meantime. Cerundolo is prepared to kick off his summer on a high note at the Montreal Masters after winning his first ATP title in Bastad and climbing into the top-25. In round one of the Montreal tournament, Cerundolo faces Karen Khachanov.
