Rafael Nadal skips Montreal and goes back to the practice court

Rafael Nadal, a 22-time Major winner, won’t play in Montreal this week. Given that he is still dealing with an abdominal injury sustained at Wimbledon, the Spaniard will not attempt to win a sixth championship at one of his favorite tournaments.

Prior to his Wimbledon semifinal matchup against Nick Kyrgios, Nadal withdrew due to an ailment that prevented him from practicing his serve. After taking a proper break, Rafa returned to the practice court and gave it his all to play in Montreal and get significant points in the year-end competition.

The Spaniard didn’t play well in Madrid and Rome since he missed the start of the clay season. In an effort to overcome an injury, Nadal won his 22nd Major title at Roland Garros after defeating Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinal and Casper Ruud in the championship match.

The Spaniard traveled to Wimbledon after a well-earned break and made it to his third consecutive All England Club semifinal. It followed an exhausting, five-set triumph over Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinal that took close to four and a half hours.

Due to an abdominal injury, Nadal withdrew before his matchup with Nick Kyrgios in the semi-final. Rafa had a few days off and then went back to his Mallorca home’s practice court to improve on his baseline game. On the practice court, he appeared fine, but after that injury, his serve became his biggest weakness.

Last week, Nadal began to practice it, but his body did not respond properly. He made the decision to miss Canada and stay at home till he is completely well.
