a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 victory, the Italian had a 6-2, 4-2 lead. With a 6-0, 6-1, 7-5 victory over Richard Gasquet, Rafa defeated the Frenchman for the 18th time in as many matches.

In the first two games, Nadal had his most commanding performance at the US Open. He then won a late break in the third set to take the lead and go to the round of 16.

At Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday night, Rafa took on Frances Tiafoe in an attempt to reach his 17th consecutive Major quarterfinal.

In front of his supporters, Tiafoe defeated Nadal for the first time, triumphing 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to go to the round of eight. After the first set, Nadal required a medical timeout. He played well in the second set, scoring one break to tie the match.

At 3-3 in the third set, the American took a break and held with an ace in game eleven to finish the match and get closer to the finish line. In the fourth set, Nadal stayed aggressive and took a break at 2-1. Rafa had three consecutive breaks and gave his opponent five straight games, which allowed Tiafoe to advance to the finish line rather than building on it.

“As usual, I had a terrific time when I was in New York. I’m glad to return home but sad about the loss of leaving. I have crucial things to attend to before I can resume practicing. It was wonderful to see the wonderful employees of the @newyorkpalace again. See you in 2019!” stated Rafael Nadal.
