Nadal was upset by 24-year-old Tiafoe for the first time in his career. The head-to-head record is still 2-1 in favor of Nadal. Tiafoe remarked after defeating Nadal, “I’m beyond ecstatic, almost in tears, I can’t believe it,” according to the ATP website.
“I dominated today’s tennis match. I have no idea what happened.”
Tiafoe on preventing Nadal from prevailing in the fourth set
When I went up 40/0 at 4-3 [in the fourth set], Tiafoe stated, “my legs felt like cement.”
“I simply needed to leave the game and then ask God to spare me from having to serve for it. I was fortunate enough to escape from that game. I didn’t leave Rafa with the utmost respect. I came out to defeat you guys in a tennis match.
In order to win the opening set, Tiafoe held on to his serve for the remainder of the game after earning the match’s first break. When Tiafoe was serving to stay in the second set in the tenth game of the second set, Nadal recovered and secured his first break of the match.
After a crushing defeat in the second set, Tiafoe was able to maintain his composure and broke Nadal in the third set’s seventh game before serving out the match three games later. In the fourth set, Nadal had a better opening as he took an early break to go up 3-1.
Nobody could have guessed at that point that Tiafoe would win the following five games to finish a four-set victory. Next, Tiafoe portrays Andrey Rublev.
