Jasmine Paolini and Anna Blinkova will compete for the title in the Transylvania Open.

In Cluj-Napoca, the Transylvania Open final will feature Jasmine Paolini vs. Anna Blinkova. Paolini and Blinkova, two unseeded athletes, pulled off surprises in their respective semi-final matches on Saturday to advance to the finals.

In their semi-final match, seventh seed Xiyu Wang was upset by Paolini 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in two hours and 31 minutes. Paolini defeated Wang 62% to 50% in second-serve points and 57% to 58% in first-serve points.

Despite breaking Wang’s serve five times for the match, Paolini dropped her serve four times overall. The 78th-ranked player in the world finished with 31 victories against Wang’s 36. Paolini declared after the victory, “I had a very strong performance.

It’s never easy to play with (Wang), who is a terrific player who can hit enormous winners and big serves.

Transylvania Open: Unstoppable Anna Blinkova

Blinkova defeated fourth seed Anastasia Potapova in the other semifinal.

Blinkova overcame a set deficit to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 25 minutes, earning her a spot in the main tournament. “The match was very tough, and (Potapova is) a tremendous player, so it was a very mental triumph,” Blinkova said after the game.

Even trying to express how I feel is impossible. But I’m ecstatic to stay in Cluj until the very end because I adore this city and I’m overjoyed to be in the championship. I made an effort to remain fearless, forceful, and psychologically tough, and that helped me to prevail.

The Transylvania Open final marked Anna Blinkova’s first WTA final. Jasmine Paolini, her rival, will be competing in her second WTA final. This will be the fifth time the two players will be in direct conflict.

Blinkova prevailed in their first two meetings, which took place in 2017 in Manchester and in 2020 at the Australian Open, but Paolini prevailed in their most recent WTA 125k matches, which took place in Bol in 2021 and Contrexeville in 2022. Transylvania Open Twitter contributed the image.
