Guadalajara Open: Despite losing, Daria Kasatkina still qualifies for the WTA Finals

At the Guadalajara Open on Thursday, Daria Kasatkina was defeated in her third-round encounter. After two hours and fourteen minutes of play, Anna Kalinskaya defeated Kasatkina 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. In addition to converting seven break opportunities on Kasatkina’s serve, Kalinskaya successfully defended eight of the 14 break points she faced.

With just two more points than her opponent, she scored 91 to win the game. Kasatkina’s conclusion was nonetheless optimistic despite the defeat. The 25-year-old, who last week was seeded seventh in Mexico and was attempting to advance to the eight-woman year-ending finale, was able to secure a spot in the finals, which will be held in Texas the following week.

Aryna Sabalenka, who was defeated in the second round on Wednesday, joined Kasatkina in making it to the WTA finals.

The Guadalajara Open is won by Coco Gauff.

Meanwhile, Victoria Azarenka announced the outcome that made Kasatkina and Sabalenka eligible.

The 14th seed Madison Keys, who was also vying for a spot in the finals, was defeated by the former world number one in their third-round match. After more than two hours of play, the two-time Major champion prevailed 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-1. In the quarterfinals, Coco Gauff will take against Azarenka.

The fifth-seeded American defeated Martina Trevisan in the round of 16 with a score of 6-0, 6-3 in just 61 minutes. Gauff converted five of the six break points she had on Trevisan’s serve while saving eight of the nine break points she faced.

Gauff was joined in the quarterfinals by two other Americans. To win, Sloane Stephens defeated Caroline Garcia, the sixth seed, 7-6(6), 7-5. In 1 hour and 34 minutes, Jessica Pegula, the third seed, defeated Bianca Andreescu 6-4, 6-4.

Pegula and Stephens will compete against one another for a spot in the semifinals. Liudmila Samsonova was defeated by Marie Bouzkova, 0-6, 7-5, 6-3, after she overcome a setback in the first. Kalinskaya will go up against Bouzkova next.

Veronika Kudermetova, the eighth seed, and Maria Sakkari, the fourth seed, will compete for a semi-final position at the Guadalajara Open. By scores of 6-4, 6-4, Kudermetova defeated Jelena Ostapenko, the 12th seed. After two hours and seventeen minutes, Sakkari defeated the 14th-seeded Danielle Collins, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
