Rafael Nadal, the reigning Australian Open champion, welcomed a brief campaign at Melbourne Park. Rafa suffered a left hip injury during his match against Mackenzie McDonald in the second round, losing 6-4, 6-4, and 7-5 to quit the court and forfeit 1955 ATP points.

Nadal refused to give up and gave his all in the third set despite clearly struggling, garnering plaudits from his rival. McDonald defeated Nadal in two hours and 32 minutes, maintaining his composure in the face of an injured foe and winning the match for the first time in his career.
