Shelby Rogers was going to play her best tennis, according to Aryna Sabalenka, so going into their Australian Open match, she knew she had to be totally focused from the get-go. Rogers was defeated 6-3, 6-1 by Sabalenka, the No. 5 seed, to advance to the third round of the Australian Open.

She plays the game so well. She constantly plays extremely quickly, which puts me under strain. I was hoping she’d perform at a high level today. It’s always difficult matchups against Shelby, so I stayed concentrated the entire match, which is probably why I was able to win this one in two sets,” Sabalenka said after defeating Rogers, according to Tennis Majors.

Against Rogers, Sabalenka was successful in her mission.

Sabalenka squandered two break points in the second game, setting up the first break points of the match; Rogers then broke the tie in the third game after saving two break points.

After blowing four early break points and struggling to convert her opportunities, Sabalenka improved as she claimed back-to-back breaks in the sixth and eighth games to win five games in a row and seal the first set. In the fourth game, Sabalenka missed out on two more break points as Rogers took a 3-1 lead.

In the second game of the second set, Rogers had a break point that might have given her a 2-0 lead but she didn’t take advantage of it, ending Sabalenka’s run of five straight games won.

Sabalenka now had a 3-0 head-to-head record versus Rogers, and from that point on, there was only one player on the court as she gained three breaks and won six straight games to finish the second set in stunning fashion.

Sabalenka upset Rogers in’s-Hertogenbosch last year on the grass courts, and she also prevailed in a hard-fought three-set match in Cincinnati.
