The incumbent Australian Open champion and top seed was Rafael Nadal. However, after battling injuries for seven months, the Spaniard was a long way from capturing another Major championship. Rafa was off of form before he arrived in Melbourne, and after the loss in the second round, he suffered another blow, dropping 1955 points.
As a result, a 22-time Major champion will drop out of the top 5 and move up to no. 6 on the following Monday. The young guns, Holger Rune, Taylor Fritz, and Felix Auger-Aliassime, who also fell short of the quarterfinals at Melbourne Park, remained behind Nadal.
With two Major titles and 20 straight victories, Rafa was a player to beat in the first half of 2022. But at Wimbledon, he had a stomach injury and withdrew.
