Magda Linette stunned fourth-seeded Caroline Garcia to advance to her first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Australian Open, leaving her in complete amazement and dismay. Garcia, the current WTA Finals champion, was defeated by Linette, who is rated No. 45 in the world, 7-6 (3) 6-4.

Garcia was one of the top favorites to win the Australian Open, but Linette was able to eliminate her from the competition. “It still defies belief. I have no idea what transpired. Actually, I’m speechless. She’s such a wonderful opponent and such a tough one, especially on a big stage. I don’t want to say I didn’t expect it because when I first stepped onto the court, I was confident in how well I was playing.

I’m really relieved that I maintained my composure throughout the entire first set and was able to return “According to the WTA website, Linette stated during her on-court interview.

Linette’s determination throughout her match with Garcia paid off.

Garcia, the favorite going into the match, jumped off to a 3-0 lead and back-to-back breaks.

Linette, who was two breaks down, showed no signs of giving up as she broke Garcia back in games four and ten to eventually force a tie-break. Linette won the opening set in the tie-break by scoring three straight points after being up 4-3. Following her victory against Garcia in the opening set, Linette lost a break point in the opening game of the second set and failed to convert any of her three break points in the seventh game.

Garcia broke the Frenchwoman in the eighth game to take a 5-3 lead, but Linette persisted in pushing Garcia’s service games as she served out the match in the next game. Linette will face former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova in her upcoming match.

Linette has been playing superbly thus far, and by defeating Garcia, she showed that she is capable of defeating a star player. It will be interesting to see if Linette can now defeat Pliskova as well.
