Mayor of Banja Luka Drasko Stanivukovic addresses Stan Wawrinka with a refined message.
Stan Wawrinka was warmly welcomed by the Srpska Open crowd, and Banja Luka mayor Drasko Stanivukovic personally praised the Swiss for participating. On Monday, Luca Van Assche defeated the Swiss player 1-6 7-6 (4) 6-4 to send Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, out of Banja Luka in the first round.
“We are unique as a people! Only here can tennis players receive deafening applause when they shatter a racket, as opposed to everywhere else where they are booed. Stanivukovic wrote, “I congratulated @stanwawrinka for visiting our city and for allowing us to see excellent tennis. The audience in Banja Luka gave him enormous support.
No Wawrinka-Novak Djokovic match will take place.
Following the draw, there was a good chance that the second round would include a match between Wawrinka and Djokovic.
Djokovic received a first-round bye in the competition as the top seed in Banja Luka. Djokovic awaited the outcome of Wawrinka vs. Van Assche’s match in the round of 16. Against Van Assche, Wawrinka actually got out to a strong start, and it appeared as though the Swiss player would secure a straightforward victory.
Wawrinka then failed to capitalize on his opportunities during the match’s pivotal moments. Wawrinka failed to convert any of his seven break points during three Van Assche service games in the second set. Wawrinka squandered four break points, three of which were consecutive, in the 11th game of the second set alone.
As Van Assche went on to stage a significant comeback, Wawrinka ultimately paid the price. Van Assche couldn’t contain his joy after the game and referred to Wawrinka as “an amazing legend.” “I’m thrilled with my victory. It was nice to perform for you all.
Van Assche remarked after defeating Wawrinka, “It’s normal that at first [the fans] were behind Stan because he’s a fantastic legend of the sport and I’m really glad to win this match.
