After defeating Emma Raducanu in Stuttgart, Jelena Ostapnko referred to her as “a great player.” In a matchup of two Grand Slam winners, Ostapenko defeated Raducanu 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round of the Stuttgart Open.

Ostapenko praised Raducanu’s performance after the match, saying she “played really well and did not give Raducanu any chances.” I believe I performed quite well and didn’t give her many opportunities. I was aware that she is a talented player and that the match would be challenging.

I’m always prepared for conflict. Being in Stuttgart once more is wonderful. The environment here is pretty wonderful, Ostapenko said, according to The Tennis Letter.

How was Raducanu demolished by Ostapenko?

Ostapenko earned back-to-back breaks in the third and fifth games to take a commanding 5-1 lead in the first set after Raducanu served out the first game of the match.

By serving out the seventh game, Raducanu broke Ostapenko’s winning streak of five straight games. Ostapenko regularly served out the opening set in the eighth game, so little changed there. Raducanu served out the opening game of the second set before Ostapenko completely dominated the remaining games. The second set was essentially a rerun of the first.

Ostapenko won six straight games to complete a two-set victory, taking breaks in the third, fifth, and seventh games. Ostapenko’s subsequent encounter pits her against Ons Jabeur, the third-seeded player. Ostapenko highlighted her coping mechanism for fear after easily defeating Raducanu.

“Of course it’s not simple because when you step onto the court, you obviously want to win, play well, and have fun. But there are difficult matches occasionally, and you don’t play as well when you’re thinking too much, according to Ostapenko.

It will be interesting to see if Ostapenko can now defeat Jabeur as well and go to the Stuttgart quarterfinal.
