Denis Shapovalov and Grigor Dimitrov advance at the ATP Barcelona
Following strong victory, Denis Shapovalov and Grigor Dimitrov have advanced to the third round of the Barcelona Open. In the second round, Shapovalov defeated Jozef Kovalik 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and twenty minutes. Denis turned in 13 aces while blocking every break point.
He maintained pressure on the opposition and defeated Jozef once in each set to win just his eighth match of the year. In the third game of the match, the Canadian dodged a few break points but failed to capitalize on a return opportunity.
In the following five games, both players displayed strong serving, with Shapovalov establishing a 5-4 lead with a forehand crosscourt winner. After the opponent’s fierce forehand down the line winner in the tenth game, Kovalik served to stay in the set and faced two set points.
Denis attempted another strong forehand to take the opening point and win the set 6-4 in 52 minutes.
On Wednesday in Barcelona, Denis Shapovalov and Grigor Dimitrov celebrated victory.
With a forehand winner in the third game of the second set, the Canadian saved a break point and broke the Slovak in the following game to take a 3-1 lead.
At 4-2, Denis served and was put to the test. He held for an essential hold and a 5-2 lead by saving four break points and hitting a forehand crosscourt winner. Shapovalov successfully sealed the victory at 5-3 and held at love to go to the round of 16 in style.
After a superb performance, Grigor Dimitrov, the 11th seed, defeated Emilio Gomez 6-3, 6-1, in 63 minutes. After getting the opening serve in, Grigor lost two points and lost serve once on his opponent’s lone opportunity.
Gomez was way off the mark; he lost 57% of the points he faced and gave Dimitrov six chances to take five straight breaks. In the sixth game of the opener, Emilio held for 3-3 after saving a break point with a service winner.
When Emilio netted an easy forehand a few minutes later, Grigor broke at 15 and won the seventh game at love. The Bulgarian finished game nine with an ace for a 6-3 victory in 30 minutes, rarely losing a point after the opening shot.
Before dropping a break in game four of the second set, Dimitrov broke twice to take a 3-0 lead. In games five and seven, Girgor stole the opponent’s serve and controlled the pace on the return to win the victory and cap off a simple workday.
