If Emma Raducanu doesn’t perform well in her forthcoming clay-court competitions, she might need a Wimbledon wildcard. In the opening round of the Stuttgart Open, Raducanu, who was ranked 68th in the world on Monday, was brutally defeated by Jelena Ostapenko, 6-1, 6-2.

Raducanu advanced to the quarterfinals of a WTA 500 competition in Stuttgart last year. Raducanu will lose ground and slip in the standings as a result of her elimination in the first round at this year’s Stuttgart competition. Raducanu is currently rated 83rd in the world in the live rankings.

A WTA 1000 competition will be held in Madrid the following week. Having a first-round bye in Madrid last year, Raducanu won her first two matches in the competition before falling to Anhelina Kalinina in the round of 16. This year, Raducanu will have to begin her Madrid campaign in the first round and must win three games at the very least to avoid dropping points.

Raducanu will drop out of the top 100 for the first time since joining it in September 2021 if she loses early in Madrid.

Will Raducanu need a wildcard into Wimbledon?

Five weeks prior to the commencement of the tournament, the main draw cuts are announced.

Therefore, if Raducanu were to allow herself to drop out of the top 100 in the next weeks, she wouldn’t be able to qualify for Wimbledon‘s main draw. The Wimbledon organizers would undoubtedly award Raducanu a main draw wildcard, so even if she doesn’t make the Wimbledon main draw, she won’t be competing in the qualifying round.

Raducanu received a main draw wildcard in 2021 and entered the Wimbledon main draw. The British player made it as far as the round of 16 before being forced to retire against Ajla Tomljanovic, making Raducanu’s tennis one of the more encouraging tales from the competition that year.

Raducanu’s return to Wimbledon last year generated a lot of buzz. However, as long as Raducanu is active and playing professional tennis, that will probably be the case. How well Raducanu does at Wimbledon this year remains to be seen.
